Life in the Pandemic
Covid-19 has undoubtedly affected all of us in some way. Australia wide we have spent significant time in lockdown. One of the longest was the 112 days Melburnians spent indoors. As well as the majority of Australians being in lockdown right now!
A product of our time in lockdown is that we’ve seen a growth in alternative working arrangements. Workplaces have seen that teams work well from home. And have continued it. The ABS stated that two in five people with a job that allowed it worked from home. It doesn’t look like that will be changing anytime soon!
Working from your home office and having to run your computer workstation all day. As well as the costs of heating your home during the winter months. Even running the kettle to make a cup of tea. This can all add up to a lockdown bill nightmare.
In fact, a Canadian study found that energy usage can increase as much as 46% during lockdown. And the ACCC found in 2020 that house bills rose by 7% due to the infrequent lockdowns.

To help you. We have made some tips on how to cut your electricity usage during lockdown.
Tips on reducing high energy bills during lockdown:
- Turn off lights when not in use. This is the first that comes to mind, but is also one of the easiest ways to save!
- Did you know that washing your clothes with unnecessarily high heat can be costing you money. 90% of the energy it takes to power a washing machine comes from heating the water. Switching to a warm setting can slice energy usage by half. Better yet, use the cold cycle!
- Take your devices off charge before 100%. Did you know that they still drain power when fully charged? Also, keeping your phone on charge after 100% can hurt its battery life, costing you in the long-run.
