How long do solar panels last?
Like the battery in your iPhone, solar panels don’t keep operating at 100% from day one. This is because, whether in shine or storm, our trusty photovoltaics have to live outside. And this is where the new solar warranties from Canadian Solar come into play. They now warrant a high performance for the first 25 years of the lifespan of their solar panels. During the first year, the power output of their products will be no less than 97.5% of the labeled power output. And from years 2 through 25, they warrant that the annual power decline will be no more than 0.6%. So after these 25 years, Canadian Solar warrants that the power output will be no less than 83.1% of the labeled power output.
Before, like its competitors, Canadian Solar sold this performance warranty separately. But now they are so sure of their products’ reliability, that they offer this solar panel warranty with all new panels sold.
Why are solar warranties important?
There’s the old phrase “You get what you pay for”. The same is the case for solar panels. It may seem better value to get a cheaper panel. But most lower-tier manufacturers only offer 10-15 year performance solar warranties. And after this time is up, their panels can see a large drop in performance. Often, they will need to be replaced.
But when you pay more for a high-quality Canadian Solar panel, your system is warranted to perform well for at least 25 years. And so it will keep paying itself off for many years to come.
