Which Solar panels should I choose?

If you have made the decision to install solar panels on your home, it might be time to consider which specific product you should be looking for. There are numerous options out there when it comes to solar systems, but there are few things you can look for that will help narrow your search.

Mono vs Poly

There are two different main types of solar panels, monocrystalline and polycrystalline. Mono solar panels are comprised of a higher grade silicon and are recognisable by the round edges of the solar cells (compared to poly panels where the cells are perfectly rectangular). Mono solar panels are smaller and operate at a higher efficiency, yet are significantly more expensive.

Polycrystalline panels undergo a more simple manufacturing process and are also relatively straightforward to install. These panels are created by raw-melted silicon being poured into a square mould. The silicon is then cut into square wafers. These kinds of solar panels are cheaper, and although they don’t run quite as efficiently as mono panels, they are a prevalent option for homeowners.

Something to consider when you are searching for the perfect solar system, is the durability of the product. Although an option may be cost-effective, if it only lasts a few years you could be in danger of ruining your investment. Not only should you look at the strength of the product, but what kind of warranty you will be offered when you purchase the panels. If the manufacturer provides a product warranty of at least ten years, you can be confident that you will be receiving a product that has been cared for and manufactured thoroughly. Remember, the cheapest option isn’t always the best option!

In many cases, the supplier, who may be selling you the panels, is not the manufacturer. It is essential to research the experience and reputation of the company producing the panels you are considering. There is a ranking system which distinguishes the quality of product a given company provides. For example, if a manufacturer is rated as a Tier 1 producer of solar panels they are considered in the top 2% of manufacturers on the market. This rating also means that you will be getting your solar panels from a company who has been in the industry for longer than five years.
