What are Flexible Exports?
Flexible Exports allow your solar system to export up to 10kW per phase, with the export limit automatically adjusting throughout the day based on local network conditions. This dynamic approach ensures you’re exporting as much clean energy as possible, without negatively impacting the stability of the grid. Since its initial rollout in July 2023, over 88% of eligible customers have already embraced this option, highlighting its effectiveness and popularity.
Key Changes and What It Means for You
- For All Customers: As of July 17, 2025, Flexible Exports extends to all remaining council areas in South Australia, making it universally accessible.
- Existing Solar Owners: If you already have solar, your current export arrangements will remain unchanged until you upgrade or replace your system. At that point, you will choose between a Flexible Export plan or a lower fixed export limit.
- New and Upgrading Systems:
- Non-SWER Customers: You can opt for a fixed export limit of 1.5kW per phase or a Flexible Export limit of up to 10kW per phase (with a fallback of 1.5kW if flexible export is unavailable).
- SWER Customers (Single-wire earth-return lines): This is a significant improvement! Customers in regional areas on SWER lines can now install up to 10kVA of solar capacity (up from 5kVA) and have a 10kVA battery limit. While exports might still have some limitations in certain areas (potentially even 0kW fallback), this allows for much larger installations, maximizing self-consumption. For new or upgraded systems, SWER customers can choose between a fixed 0kW export limit or a Flexible Export limit of up to 10kW (with a fallback of 0kW).
Ensuring Compliance
To utilise Flexible Exports, your installation must comply with SA Government Dynamic Export Requirements. This includes having a compatible inverter and import/export monitoring device, site-wide export control for all exporting solar inverters, a correctly sized meter isolator, and successful registration and capability testing via the REX Portal. Failure to register and pass the test will result in your export being limited to the default (0kW or 1.5kW).
