What is the Solar Battery Rebate?
Simply put, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program sis a 30% rebate discount on new batteries installed on and after July 1, 2025. It’s estimated that this will save consumers $335 per usable kilowatt-hour. This is based on the $36 Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) value. The rebate is limited to one rebate per electricity meter (NMI), meaning that the rebate could be applicable across multiple different properties with multiple NMIs.
What Are the Benefits of Solar Batteries?
Solar batteries are highly beneficial for buildings running on solar panels. Usually, solar-powered energy systems are great throughout the day, but underperform when it’s cloudy, and produce no energy during the nighttime. This is where a solar battery is a huge help.
Throughout the day, the panels can absorb solar energy and store it in your solar battery. Then, during the evening when the sun is down and households have peak electricity usage, you can use the energy accumulated in your solar battery to power your home. It affords more independence from the power grid and lowers your energy bill.
Another benefit is that solar batteries also act as a source of backup power whenever there’s a power outage. Should there ever be an emergency or a climate disaster that disconnects you from the power grid, a solar battery can be precisely the help you need.
Who Is Eligible for the Solar Rebate?
Homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities such as sports clubs, libraries, and community centres are eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. That said, you can’t just purchase any solar battery. They have to specifically fit under the following guidelines:
- Battery must have a nominal capacity between 5–100 kWh
- Receive a rebate on up to 50 kWh of usable capacity
- Be a brand new battery
- Be installed on-grid or off-grid
- Off-grid systems must be at least 1 km from a main grid line or possibly face a grid connection cost of $30,000+
- Be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable (on-grid systems only)
- Be connected to new or existing rooftop solar
- Include a battery and an inverter listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list
For the full guidelines, you can visit the Australian government website. If you’re still unsure, feel free to contact us so we can answer any questions about your eligibility.

How Do I Apply For The Battery Rebate?
The best part is that the consumer doesn’t have to apply for anything. It’s all handled by the solar battery installer, who will knock off the cost from your bill in your invoice, thanks to the rebate. A good solar installer will be very clear about which rebates they’re applying to your installation and how much you’ll save, so make sure you discuss it carefully with them before signing a contract.
How Long Can I Wait Before Applying for the Battery Rebate?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program will apply for five years until 2030. However, each year the rebate discount will diminish. That’s why it’s important to get a solar battery as soon as possible, so you can maximise your savings.
Solar Battery Rebate Adelaide, South Australia
While this solar battery rebate applies nationally across Australia, and of course South Australia, there are also specific rebates that apply to people living in Adelaide. If you live in this area, here are some incentives you should consider:
City of Adelaide Battery Rebate
This rebate covers 50% of the installation costs for solar batteries. It’s still ambiguous as to whether this stacks with the 30% federal battery rebate, so make sure to check with a solar company to see if you’re eligible.
City of Adelaide Solar PV Rebate
The city of Adelaide also provides a 20% rebate for the installation of PV solar panels. Savings can include:
- 1.5–10 kW systems: Up to $1,000.
- 10–20 kW systems: Up to $2,500.
- 20+ kW systems: Up to $5,000.
