It is easy to assume that the biggest battery is automatically the best option. But for most households, the smarter answer is more personal. The right battery size depends on how much solar your home produces during the day, how much electricity your family uses at night, and whether you want extra flexibility for cloudy days, future appliances or changing energy habits.

For some small to medium-sized family homes, a battery around 10-15 kWh may be a practical range to consider, especially where there is higher evening electricity use, air conditioning, hot water, multiple devices or a need for more flexibility on cloudy days. But the right size should still be matched to the home, not chosen from a guess.

Why battery size matters

A solar battery stores electricity so the home can use more of its own solar later. That sounds simple, but the sizing is important.

If the battery is too small, it may run out early in the evening when the household is still using power for cooking, lights, television, air conditioning, hot water or charging devices. If the battery is too large, the home may not produce enough excess solar to fill it regularly, which can make the system less efficient financially.

The goal is not to buy the biggest battery. The goal is to choose a battery that can store enough useful solar for your night-time usage, with enough flexibility for cloudy days and future household needs.

A simple family-of-four example

Let us use a common example: a family of four in South Australia with rooftop solar.

Australian homes use different amounts of electricity depending on the home size, appliances, weather and habits. As a broad guide, energy.gov.au says Australian homes use around 11-23 kWh per day on average. A family of four with air conditioning, cooking, hot water, laundry, appliances and evening usage may sit around 15-20 kWh per day, sometimes more during very hot or cold periods.

Now imagine this household has a 6.6 kW solar system. In good sunny conditions, a system of that size may generate roughly 20-30 kWh in a day, depending on location, roof direction, panel angle, shading and season.

If this family uses around 15-20 kWh per day, a battery around 10-15 kWh may be a practical range to consider. It can give the household more stored energy for night-time use, rather than relying heavily on the grid after sunset.

This range may also give the home more flexibility on cloudy or rainy days, when solar production may be lower. In some systems, the battery may also be able to charge from the grid during cheaper off-peak periods, but this depends on the battery, inverter settings, retailer plan and whether grid charging is enabled.

That is why the wording matters. A 10-15 kWh battery is not automatically the right answer for every four-person household. But for a family with meaningful night-time usage, air conditioning, electric cooking, hot water, pool equipment, devices or future EV charging plans, it can be a sensible size range to review.

When a smaller battery may be enough

Some homes do not need as much battery capacity. If someone is home during the day and the household already uses a lot of solar while the sun is shining, there may be less excess solar available to store.

For those homes, a smaller battery may still help cover evening essentials, but a very large battery may not be filled often enough to justify the cost.

This is why two homes with the same number of people can need different battery sizes. One family may use more electricity during the day. Another may export plenty of solar and use most of their power at night. The second home may get more value from a larger battery.

When a larger battery may be worth reviewing

A larger battery may be worth reviewing if the home has higher evening demand or future energy needs. That can include ducted air conditioning, electric hot water, electric cooking, a pool pump, home office equipment, high appliance usage or plans to charge an EV.

Some homeowners also want more backup flexibility during outages, although backup capability depends on the battery, inverter, switchboard design and system configuration. It should always be checked before purchase, because not every battery setup backs up the whole home.

The key is to design around how the household actually uses electricity, not just the number written on the battery brochure.
