What Is the Rebate and Who Is Eligible?
The proposed rebate will provide around $350 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) off the installed cost of a home or small business battery system — a discount of approximately 30%.
Eligibility includes:
- Homes installing batteries between 5kWh and 50kWh
- Small businesses and community organisations, for systems up to 100kWh
- Systems must be installed by SAA-accredited technicians using CEC-approved batteries
- Batteries must be switched on after 1 July 2025
The rebate will be administered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) — the same federal system that supports solar panel subsidies — and will reduce in value each year until 2030.
How Much Could You Save?
Here’s what the rebate could look like based on system size:
Battery Size | Estimated Federal Rebate |
13kWh | $4,550 |
16kWh | $5,600 |
24kWh | $8,400 |
32kWh | $11,200 |
In addition to the federal rebate, some South Australians may also be eligible for the current state-based REPS scheme of up to $2,000, further reducing the cost. SunEnergy can help assess your eligibility for both.
Why Acting Now Matters
Although the rebate won’t officially begin until 1 July 2025 (and only if Labor wins the election), now is the time to act.
Battery manufacturers have already raised concerns about supply shortages if the rebate is introduced. With more than four million Australian homes already equipped with solar, the demand for batteries is expected to surge after the election.
Waiting could mean:
- Delays in installation — possibly pushing your system into 2026
- Reduced rebate value, as the subsidy decreases year by year
- Higher battery prices, due to demand-driven price increases and limited supply
By preparing early, you’ll be positioned to access the full value of the rebate before the rush begins.
SunEnergy’s Early Installation Process
SunEnergy has developed a customer-first process for those who want to secure an installation date at todays price whilst positioning themselves for the possible rebate:
- We install your solar and battery system now, avoiding post-election demand spikes
- The battery component remains switched off until after 1 July 2025
- If the rebate proceeds, we activate your battery and submit the application
- Once approved, you receive the full rebate amount
All our battery systems are Clean Energy Council-approved, and all work is carried out by fully qualified, Solar Accreditation Australia-accredited installers.
“We’re giving South Australians the chance to act early and be ready. We’ve secured stock, structured our processes and positioned our customers for the best possible outcome — without the chaos that’s likely to follow.”
— SunEnergy Spokesperson
What If the Government Isn’t Re-elected?
If the government changes after the 3 May election, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program will not proceed — and no rebate will be available.
However, early-action customers will still benefit from reduced energy bills, access to affordable battery storage, and the peace of mind that comes from securing installation ahead of any future incentive or price change.
Why SunEnergy Customers Are Ahead of the Curve?
SunEnergy has been helping South Australians access affordable solar and battery systems through our exclusive zero-upfront-cost programs, including:
SunZero
A fully funded solar and maintained battery program for eligible homes — no cost to install, no loans, and no finance. Limited to just 600 South Australian homes, this program is backed by private funding and expected to fill rapidly once the rebate is confirmed.
SunPlus
We install a fully maintained solar and battery system at no cost, and you simply pay a small, fixed monthly access fee. There’s no loan, no debt, and no ownership obligations — just energy savings from day one.
Both programs position eligible customers to access the federal rebate without having to spend anything upfront. If the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is implemented, we handle the rebate process directly — meaning you could receive thousands from a system that cost you nothing to install.
