A sweltering heatwave has descended upon South Australia, and unfortunately, it’s brought more than just rising temperatures. Over 25,000 homes across the Yorke Peninsula are currently experiencing power outages due to a transmission fault, leaving residents without electricity during a critical time.
SA Power Networks has confirmed the widespread outages, citing a fault on the transmission network – an issue outside of their direct control. While crews are working diligently to restore power, an estimated restoration time remains unclear. As of 11 am ACDT, the SA Power Networks website reported over 25,000 affected customers, down slightly from the 27,000 initially impacted.
“A fault on the Transmission Network which is outside the control of SA Power Networks,” a spokesperson explained. “There are multiple faults affecting this area. Our crews are continuing their investigations and repair. We apologise for the delay in restoring power to this area.”
ElectraNet, the transmission network provider, also confirmed the fault, stating, “ElectraNet has experienced a fault on its transmission network on the Yorke Peninsula. We are working to restore power as soon as possible.”
This unfortunate incident coincides with a predicted heatwave, with temperatures already reaching the low 30s and expected to climb to 35 degrees. The lack of power during such extreme heat poses significant challenges and potential risks for residents, especially vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with medical conditions.
This situation highlights the vulnerability of our traditional power grid, especially during extreme weather events. Could solar and battery storage have prevented this?
